On the morning of 7 May 2026, Lithuanian State Border Guard Service (VSAT) officers brought down a contraband drone in Šalčininkų district using anti-drone equipment. The drone was found crashed at the interception site, carrying a box containing 850 packs of Minsk Capital QS cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps. Under Lithuanian excise liability the cargo is valued at €4,683. This was the 17th drone interception of 2026 on the Lithuania-Belarus border.
Anti-drone equipment brought the aircraft down intact with its cargo
Officers deployed countermeasures in the drone's flight path. The disruption cut the aircraft's control link; the drone made uncontrolled ground contact and was found at the crash site with the cargo still onboard. The 850 packs of Minsk Capital QS - a Belarusian brand carrying excise stamps not valid under Lithuanian customs law - were recovered intact and transferred to the Šalčininkų outpost.
Šalčininkų district is the primary drone smuggling zone in southern Lithuania. The district borders Belarus directly to the east across forested terrain that limits ground-based patrol but is covered by the VSAT monitoring camera network and allows anti-drone deployment.
The 17th interception of 2026, on a pace tracking the 2025 annual total
By the morning of 7 May 2026, VSAT had recorded 17 drone interceptions on the Lithuania-Belarus border in under five months of the year. The full-year 2025 total was 59 drone interceptions - an average of roughly five per month. The 2026 pace through early May was matching that rate, putting the year on track for a comparable annual total.
The count rose sharply in July. A single night at Druskininkai on 7 July added four drones simultaneously - the first time in VSAT history four aircraft were intercepted at one location in a single operation. Two more followed at Padvarioniai and Prūdelis on the night of 9 July, and a third in Šalčininkų district again on 12 July. The May 7 interception sits in the pre-summer baseline from which that escalation built.
