Lithuania balloon cargos, Oct 8 - nine, 55,490 packs

Border guards and police intercepted nine balloon-borne cigarette cargoes in four Lithuanian districts overnight and on the morning of October 8, 2026, the State Border Guard Service (VSAT) said. Over Varėna, where four were seized, AirVeto's wind data shows air from the Belarus side at every height up to 3,000 m, all 13 hours from midnight to noon.

Nine cargoes were seized in four districts, 55,490 packs in all

VSAT said the cargoes were taken on Thursday night and in the morning. Varėna District had four, Kaišiadorys District three, and Ukmergė District and Panevėžys District one each. The packs were Belarusian cigarettes. By AirVeto's measurement, the four district seats lie 17 to 127 km from the Belarus border.

Some of the larger cargoes hung from clusters of balloons, not a single one. Every cargo carried a GPS transmitter, which smugglers use to track where a shipment lands. VSAT will attach the material to pretrial investigations already open into unlawful possession of excise goods, which prosecutors in different regions oversee.

The wind over Varėna came from Belarus at every height up to 3,000 m

VSAT gives no hours for the seizures, so AirVeto read the wind over Varėna, the district with four of the nine, from 00:00 to 12:00 local time on October 8. At 00:00 the wind at 3,000 m blew from the SW at 23 km/h. At 2,000 m it came from the SSW at 18 km/h. At 80 m it came from the SE at 17 km/h.

Across the 13 hourly readings, the wind at 80 m stayed between SE and SSE. At 3,000 m it stayed between SSW and SW, at 23 to 31 km/h.

For each reading AirVeto traced a straight line upwind from Varėna. At every height from 80 m to 3,000 m, all 13 lines left Lithuania across the Belarus border. At 4,000 m, 12 of them did. Method.

The four districts lie 17 to 127 km from the Belarus border

VSAT names districts, not exact sites, so AirVeto measured from each district's seat to the nearest point of the Belarus border:

• Varėna: 17 km
• Ukmergė: 78 km
• Kaišiadorys: 82 km
• Panevėžys: 127 km

The wind data above is centred on Varėna, the district with the most seizures.

VSAT's count is 166 cargoes this year, about a quarter of 2025's total

VSAT has intercepted 166 balloon-borne cigarette cargoes from Belarus in Lithuania so far in 2026. Its earlier counts:

VSAT credits a state-level emergency, a joint law-enforcement working group, large operations against smuggling groups and amended laws for the fall.

The balloons also fly toward Poland and Latvia. VSAT counts 185 cargoes intercepted in Poland this year and 16 in Latvia. Border guards also forced down 61 smuggling drones from Belarus this year. The count was 59 in 2025 and 54 in 2024.
